RID Mourns the Passing of Pope Francis, Champion of Christian Participation in Politics & Governance

Rivers in the Desert, Nigeria (RID Nigeria) joins billions of Christians around the world in mourning the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, a towering figure of compassion, conviction, and courage whose life’s work reshaped the global conversation on faith, justice, and governance.

Pope Francis was not only the spiritual leader of over a billion Catholics; he was a prophetic voice in the political wilderness — an unwavering advocate for peace, justice, and the moral imperative of Christian engagement in public life. His message to the world was clear: Christians must not retreat from politics — they must redeem it.

At RID Nigeria, we are particularly struck by how deeply Pope Francis’ life and teachings aligned with our mission — to awaken and equip a new generation of believers to take their rightful place in the arena of national development, public policy, and good governance. In a time of growing disillusionment with political institutions and widening inequality, Pope Francis reminded the world that the Gospel is not only a personal truth, but a public force.

From his encyclicals that tackled climate change and economic injustice, to his frequent calls for servant leadership, social responsibility, and inclusive dialogue, Pope Francis offered a theology of governance rooted in love, humility, and human dignity. He courageously called out corruption, challenged the conscience of leaders, and encouraged Christians not to abandon the political sphere but to inhabit it with integrity.

He once declared, “A good Catholic meddles in politics.” At RID Nigeria, we echo this bold vision and remain inspired by it.

Today, we grieve the loss of a leader whose presence transcended borders, denominations, and ideologies — yet we celebrate a legacy that will endure across generations. Pope Francis has entered into eternal rest, but his voice will continue to echo in every movement for truth, justice, and righteousness in governance.

RID Nigeria extends its heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community, to the people of the Vatican, and to all those whose lives were touched by the Holy Father’s extraordinary witness.

As we reflect on his passing, we recommit ourselves to the charge he carried: to be salt and light — not just in our churches, but in our parliaments, our councils, our campuses, and our communities.

Rest well, Holy Father. You have fought the good fight. The world is better because you walked in it.
